Introduction:
Hello everybody and welcome to the first ever edition of The Next Big Blog! My
name is John Rocca and I will do my best to bring to you the best blog around
every time! Now before I get on with it, I would like to tell everybody a little
bit about myself. I am 26 years old and I live in New Jersey. However I was born
in the great country of Brazil! I am a big fan of professional wrestling, I have
been following this art of entertainment for over 15 years but it was only
recently that I have fallen in love with another art of entertainment and thy
name is called Mixed Martial Arts. I have watched many UFC fights from back in
the day. I have seen guys come and go, guys such as Dan "The Beast" Severn, Ken
Shamrock, and Tito Ortiz among many others. The reason I named these fighters is
simply because they are some of my all time favorites. After UFC got banned in
the US I stopped following it and turned my attention fully to pro wrestling.
But it was only two years ago, after witnessing The Ultimate Fighter 3 where
Shamrock and Ortiz were coaches, I just got hooked on it again. But now more
than ever I am a true UFC fan and do you know why? Because of one man: Brock
Lesnar!
As I said before I am a pro wrestling fan and around six years ago Brock Lesnar
made his presence known in the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) where he took
the business by storm and made his mark! From the first night I saw that 296 lbs
man-beast enter the ring and decimate everybody in his path I became an instant
fan! Okay, we all know that pro wrestling is not real, things are pretty much
pre-determined but for anybody that has seen Lesnar, you can't deny the fact
that he is a natural born athlete. The way things work in pro wrestling is the
harder you work and the more fan support you have, the higher you get and for
Lesnar it didn't take so long for that to happen as just three short months
later Lesnar was on top of the world as the WWE champion. He would go on to win
that belt three more times which included his epic match against Kurt Angle at
WWE's annual extravaganza known as Wrestlemania 19.
Now I would like to fast forward a little to 2006 where Lesnar had finally
settled his no compete clause law suit he had against WWE because when he left
the company his contract was set to expire in 2009 and quitting the company in
2004 it would be five long years before he could even consider competing in any
physical sport.
(Side note: Lesnar worked many wrestling matches in Japan even when he had that
stipulation in his contract and managed to win the IWGP title.)
Brock Lesnar and Vince McMahon were able to come to an agreement and settled the
lawsuit and from then on Brock Lesnar was a free man and was able to do whatever
he wanted. In June of 2007 Brock Lesnar beat Min Soo Kim in less than a minute
via submission as he officially entered the MMA world. Soon after Brock Lesnar
came to terms with Dana White and signed to be in the UFC!
Opportunity Knocks:
"The more things change the more they stay the same." I've always liked to use
this quote so many times. But this quote has never rang truer when it proteins
to Brock Lesnar. Let's see the facts, when Brock Lesnar was wrestling it wasn't
long until he went to the top. While many wrestlers struggle years and years
before they can call themselves main eventers, Lesnar didn't want to wait that
long, he took his opportunity and made the most of it. Now, I think that the
same thing is happening but this time, IT'S REAL! Okay let's face the facts;
Lesnar has only had three professional fights under his belt. The first one he
completely annihilated a man, I would say it was a fairly easy fight for him. So
Brock went from fighting an easy opponent to fighting a former UFC heavyweight
champion in Frank Mir. Now I don't even need to explain why Lesnar lost that
fight because it is very obvious. He was dominating Mir in the early going, and
it only took one mistake and a bad call from the ref for Lesnar to lose the
momentum he was building. Mir is a very experienced fighter; he's a Brazilian
Jujitsu specialist and a veteran in the Octagon. But one thing that Lesnar is
and that is smart! He took that loss and turned it into a positive by defeating
"The Texas Crazy Horse" Heath Herring in what was a unanimous decision. Before
Lesnar came to the UFC, I have to say that the Heavyweight division was boring!
The division that was shining and was number one in the eyes of many including
yours truly was the light-heavyweight division with the ever talented Forrest
Griffin as the champion and the Middleweight division as well with the Brazilian
Phenomenon Anderson "The Spider" Silva. These guys are making their respective
divisions not only entertaining but also competitive. That is exactly what Dana
White hopes Brock Lesnar does for the Heavyweight division which is why Brock
Lesnar is going to get a title shot against the UFC legend Randy "The Natural"
Couture this early in his UFC career! There is something that has bothered me
though; Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is the "Interim" champion while Couture is
recognized as the Official champion. But the fact is, no matter how great Randy
is, no matter how much of a legend he is in the UFC, Nogueira has been out there
busting his ass defending the championship and keeping the Heavyweight division
alive while Randy was out for a year because of temper tantrums! Yes, there I
said it! If you don't like it, I'm sorry but it's ridicules to recognize Couture
as the official champion, as far as I'm concerned Couture is not the official
UFC champion. I would go as far as saying that Couture and Nogueira are both
interim champions and more along the line of co-holders of the Heavyweight crown.
But one thing is for sure, by next year there will only be one champion.
Brock Lesnar vs Randy "The Natural" Couture:
I will not give too much detail about this fight for now because I am saving it
for next time, in which by then I shall give a full analysis on both fighters
and dissect all their strengths and weaknesses. But for now I want to comment on
the hype that this fight has brought to the world of MMA. Let's begin with Randy
Couture for a moment. The guy's last fight was at UFC 74 Respect, where he
successfully defended the UFC Heavyweight crown against Gabriel Gonzaga. Since
that time he was out of action because of a misunderstanding between him and
Dana White and probably the UFC in general. I don't really feel like going there
again because you all know where I stand. But anyway he was out for a year and
now he comes back and has to face a guy who is 14 years younger than him. Not
only that, a guy who is probably twice his size. Randy's weight is around
220lbs, while Lesnar goes at 265lbs but because of his massive frame he can
certainly pass for a much larger man. I will give Randy credit though because he
wouldn't be a legend in the UFC without making an impact. He has had 23 fights
under his belt, 15 wins and 8 losses. On the other side of the octagon we have
Brock Lesnar. My goodness if you don't know who Brock Lesnar is, I say this,
turn that rock you've been under and welcome to earth! Lesnar has a very
impressive resume that dates back to his college years winning the National
Junior College Athlete Association championship as well as two Big Ten
championships. Then his crowning achievement came when he won the NCAA
championship. After that we all know what happened going into professional
wrestling and making a name for himself in the WWE. Needless to say Brock Lesnar
is already a household name and a new sensation in the UFC. So when you put
these two together there is no doubt that you will hear CA-CHING! You think Dana
White is stupid? What he just did is probably the smartest thing he's done since
The Ultimate Fighter show. On a personal level I really believe that Dana White
wants Brock Lesnar to be the top fighter in the UFC and perhaps be the new
poster boy for his company. I also believe that Dana White holds some resentment
from Couture still for walking out. Sure they have settled their differences but
why would he put Couture in this position right off the bat? There are guys that
work very hard to go up in the rankings just to get a title shot but fortunately
Brock Lesnar is not like everybody else. If Brock Lesnar is able to defeat
Couture which I hope he will, my friends, we will have witnessed a new era in
the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Up until last week I was hooked on the
election season and still am but no longer it's my number one priority. If you
are going to order one pay per view this year, then you MUST & I repeat you MUST
order UFC 91 Lesnar vs Couture!
Thank you so much for taking time out of your lives to read my blog. Stay tuned
for the next one in which I will be giving a full analysis on the fight and the
potential endings of it. Until next time!
